La Rocca Centre for Contemporary Art

La Rocca Centre for Contemporary Art
The Centre for Contemporary Art La Rocca is located in the heart of the historic center of Umbertide, in Piazza Fortebracci, inside the ancient medieval fortress erected at the end of the 14th century by the architect Angeluccio di Ceccolo based on a design by Alberto Guidalotti. The fortification, characterized by a massive quadrangular tower over 30 meters high and three crenellated towers, represents one of the most significant examples of Umbrian military architecture. In the 1980s, the structure underwent an important restoration effort, which restored its historical identity and made the internal spaces fully usable.
The center, open to the public from April to November, houses the municipal collections and regularly hosts exhibitions dedicated to the various languages of contemporary art: painting, sculpture, photography, installations, and new visual research. The environments of the fortress, with their essential character and strong historical imprint, offer an evocative context for exhibition projects and site-specific productions.
Among the collections present is the Civic Giovanni Ciagnotti collection, exhibited periodically, which includes works by the artist himself and by important protagonists of the 20th-century Italian art scene, including Renato Birolli, Mino Maccari, Luciano Minguzzi, Toti Scialoja, Mirko Basaldella, Corrado Cagli, and Domenico Consagra.
The La Rocca Centre for Contemporary Art is today a point of reference for the promotion and dissemination of contemporary art in the Upper Tiber Valley, a place where the dialogue between historical memory and contemporary creativity finds one of its most vivid expressions.
