Town of Umbertide

Town of Umbertide

Umbertide is a municipality in Umbria located along the Tiber River, with a historic center surrounded by medieval walls. Of ancient origin, it was long known as Fratta and became Umbertide in 1863 in honor of Prince Umberto of Savoy.

An important industrial and agricultural center, it preserves many Umbrian and Roman archaeological traces.

During the Middle Ages it was frequently contested between Perugia and the Papal States.

During World War II, on April 25th, 1944, a bombing destroyed the hamlet of San Giovanni, causing many civilian casualties.

The city has a long history of reconstructions and transformations that have shaped it into a key reference point in the Tiber Valley.
